Choose Health | BBQ Ranch Chicken Salad

I’m on-the-go quite a bit due to the nature of my job.  As an engineering consultant, I travel quite a often; to and from the client site, between client sites, and/or to our local office.  I also travel around the country throughout the year conducting audits as well.  I actually really enjoy the change of pace that traveling allows, but oftentimes it gives me an excuse to eat poorly.
But choosing health while on-the-go can be simple if you’re mindful and have the discipline to make the choice to eat well.  Fast food restaurants tend to bear the brunt of the blame when it comes to the health crises. However, it ultimately comes down to the choices we make as a consumer when visiting fast food restaurants.
I’ve been a fan of Wendy’s for quite some time for many different reasons; including the use of fresh ingredients. It’s one of only two fast food restaurants I’m comfortable ordering “nuggets and friieeess” from for my three year old.  But more importantly, it offers tasty, unique salad options that align with my “choose health” initiative.

In every Wendy’s restaurant, employees freshly chop vegetables every day, starting with full heads of iceberg and romaine lettuces and other veggies like cucumbers and tomatoes.  Every salad entrée uses only premium white meat chicken breasts that are grilled at the time of your order and placed warm on your salad.

                                                                                                                                        –Wendy’s
My favorite salad, hands down, is the BBQ Ranch Chicken Salad. It threw me off at first because it has corn in it. Corn! In a salad. I just never would have thought they’d go together. But it pairs oh so well with the chicken, bacon, barbecue sauce and dressing. And let’s not forget how fresh the lettuce is. So fresh there’s a video about it’s journey. Seriously!
The combination of it all is surprisingly perfect and quite filling.  I recently had a full salad during my lunch break and I’ve made a mental note to order the half size option next go-round. At least while ordering it for lunch :)!

Wendy’s BBQ Ranch Chicken Salad harkens to a smoky backyard grill-out with fire-roasted sweet corn, freshly diced tomatoes, light and lively spring mix combined with Applewood Smoked bacon and grilled chicken drizzled with savory BBQ sauce, topped with creamy Simply Dressed® BBQ Ranch Dressing.

                                                                                                                                        –Wendy’s
If you’re trying to stay consistent in regards to eating well but can’t always make a home-cooked meal, give Wendy’s salad options a try.

If you choose a salad, limit your dressing and make water your beverage of choice, you can’t go wrong!

Since I’m a sucker for blue cheese I’ve got my eye on Wendy’s Apple Pecan Chicken Salad during my next visit.

I haven't tried their Salads, there isn't one near me anymore so I will have to keep an eye out for one when I am on the go!

Oh no, Tracy! I don't think I'd survive with a Wendy's nearby (lol)! Hopefully, you'll have a chance to try one of these core salads in the near future.

I'm curious…what is the other fast food restaurant you are comfortable ordering the nuggets from? Thanks! @Three Friends and a Fork

Ha, I wondered if I'd get that question, Richi! Lets just say they're not open on Sundays :)!

I agree, Hannah! Oftentimes, we choose not to be aware because fast food restaurants are known for their burgers and fries. But if we're mindful we can make healthy choices while on-the-go (even if it's hard)!

Love Wendy's salads and their baked potatoes! They are a great quick option, and if will usually stop if there is one on the way home from a job and I am starving!

OMG, Dana, I haven't had a baked potato from Wendy's in FOREVER! Thanks for putting it back on my radar :). I agree, it is one of my go-to options as well.

I do love Wnedy's salads. I find it very tough to stick to my diet while having to eat on the road though.

Same here, Carmen! When I travel for work, it can be very tempting to just indulge.

It's been so long since I've been to Wendy's. Eating well on the go is hard. We were traveling last week and it's hard to find quick stops with healthy options. This salad looks really good. Though I'd probably get a frosty with it and then it wouldn't be nearly as healthy haha.

    • April 22, 2015 / 3:23 pm

Ha! I'm with you on all of that, Lisa. When traveling, if you plan out your stops in advance, choosing places where you know provides healthy options you'll have a better chance of sticking to eating well.

    • April 22, 2015 / 7:55 pm

Yeah, I've been there too. Eating healthy and convenience doesn't seem to coincide. But they can if we're a bit more mindful about it. Definitely not easy though :)!

I haven't been to Wendys in ages, but I love…their Frosties + their mandarin chicken salad (not sure if they even still have that–it's been a very long while, haha)! Baked potatoes are wonderful too! :]

The saddest thing about moving to our current town is that there is NO Wendy's! I love Wendy's! Luckily, there is one in the town 2 hours away, and we have to go there often, so we always make a stop at Wendy's. I do love their salads.
