Postpartum Recovery | Abs After Baby

Following birth, most women are usually eager to tackle their belly fat as soon as they are able. But, there are a few key things that mothers need to be aware of when it comes to rebuilding their core.  Please consider the following and don’t be too eager to jump into a routine or put too much pressure on your body or self as you work to lose the baby weight.

  • Wear a girdle, belly band or some sort of postpartum corset after birth.
    • It’ll help to hold things in place and provide back support while your body is working to heal.  It’s intent is not to help you lose weight but to instead offer support and a level of confidence while you work to rebuild those stomach muscles over time.
  • Core Muscles will be non-existent and have to be rebuilt.
    • You’ll actually feel more strain on your back because you’re not getting any help from your stomach muscles. You’ll need to gradually rebuild these muscles before lifting heavy weights. There are certain exercises that you should avoid and those that will help you to regain those muscles.
  • Crunches/sit-ups, planks, etc. are not going to be effective early-on.
  • Diastasis Recti – Understand what this is, how to check for it and what to do to heal if you have it.

Do you have any tips or tricks to share that helped you to get your mid-section back in order after baby?  If so, please share in the comments.

This is fantastic! I wish I would have worn a girdle early on because I remember everything felt so out of place & my guts felt like they were moving all over the place. I'll be sure to pass this along to my new mom friends. Thank you for sharing!

These are great tips! I think it's important for women to let go of the expectations. Your body is likely not going to be the same as it was before having a baby and that is OK!

I didn't wear a postpartum band before but I honestly wish I did. It's good to be sure you take care of your body after having a baby. Great tips!

I imagine these tips would still apply to women well beyond the post-partum phase? My youngest is 14 and I have no excuse for my tummy! Great post and tips.
