Women of Note

International Women’s Day occurred, as it does every year on, March 8th. I enjoyed seeing the different posts celebrating, encouraging and promoting women throughout the day on social media.

In case you aren’t aware, March is National Women’s History Month. I figured I’d share a few women celebrities in modern day society who I adore and love to follow via social media (or keep up with via the web). These women have either broken barriers, have a heart for humanitarianism, and/or strive to bring awareness to causes close to my heart. Women of this nature are already history makers, in my opinion, and I love to keep up with what they’re currently doing.

Oh, and might I add, these are some of the most beautiful women I’ve ever seen!

Misty Copeland (@mistyonpointe) – “In 2007, Misty Copeland made history by becoming the third African American female soloist and first in two decades, at American Ballet Theatre.” –source

Angelina Jolie (@angelinajolieofficial) – “Angelina Jolie and husband Brad Pitt established The Maddox Jolie-Pitt Foundation in 2006 to assist with humanitarian crises worldwide. To launch the foundation, the couple donated $1 million to Doctors Without Borders and Global Action for Children.” –source

Kerry Washington (@kerrywashington) – “In television, Washington currently stars in the hit ABC drama “Scandal.” For this role, Washington broke barriers by becoming the first African American woman to a headline a network TV show since the 1974 short-lived series “Get Christie Love.” An activist, Washington was appointed by President Barack Obama to the President’s Committee of the Arts and Humanities in 2009. She also is an active member of the V-Counsel, an esteemed group of advisors to V-Day, the global movement to end violence against women and girls.” –source

Oprah Winfrey (@oprah) – “According to Forbes magazine, Oprah was the richest African American of the 20th century and the world’s only Black billionaire for three years running…In 2005, Business Week named her the greatest Black philanthropist in American history. Oprah’s Angel Network has raised more than $51,000,000 for charitable programs, including girls’ education in South Africa and relief to the victims of Hurricane Katrina.” – source

Charlize Theron (@charlizeafrica) – “In 2007 she founded the Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project, designed to reduce the spread of AIDS among African youth.” –source

Ursula Burns (my absolute favorite) – Ursula Burns is the chairman and CEO of Xerox; the first African-American female CEO of a Fortune 500 company. Might I add, she has a degree in mechanical engineering. “Burns herself started as an intern at Xerox and worked her way up.” – source

Who are your top five celebrity women that are a must follow via social media?
(and yes, I know I chose six ;))

Misty Copeland is intense! I love ballet and I'm so glad (for both her and the art form) that her career in it is going well.

Totally, Diane! I have been following Oprah and Angelina for quite some time myself. It's been neat to watch their growth both in their career and as they age beautifully!
