Why I uninstalled Disqus...

This isn't a rant about Disqus being a bad program or having bad customer service. I actually think it's pretty neat and a great concept AND someone from customer service helped me out the very first day I installed it!

It's just not for me!

My problem is that it was making life difficult for my readers, more specifically, commenters (yeah, that's not a word)!  People have been less likely to comment because they either, couldn't figure out how with the Disqus program installed or because it was too involved (people don't have time to waste)!

No one wants to be required to upload a bunch of information just to leave a simple comment.  It's almost as bad as having captcha on (i.e. word verification)! Yeah, it's that bad!  Now, the first time you fill out the key information (name, blog name, website url, etc.) you will not have to complete it again.  Say you completed that information on someone else's website who has Disqus installed then you head over to another blog that has it installed and boom, you can just leave your comment without all the work.  That's great, but...

That initial process can be a deterrent for some, if it's their first time using Disqus, especially if it's their first time to my site!  So not cool!!!  So with that said, I had to let it go.

Anyone else have any issues with Disqus? Did you feel like it had any affect on your readers? Ok, maybe it's just me!

  2. Something else about Disqus I don't really like... I logged in with my Twitter and when I leave a comment, I won't see the reply until I log back into Disqus to leave another comment. It makes me feel like bloggers are ignoring me even though they're probably not. I just don't see it!

    1. Yes, Jessica! I had that same problem too. I thought I was helping myself by adding it so that I wouldn't have to reply to comments on my blog and via email but I ended up not getting any comments because of it!

  3. I felt the same way about it! I uninstalled it some odd months ago. The only thing I can't figure out with Blogger - is how to make it so I can have a "reply" option available when people leave a comment now (like yours). Any ideas? :)

    2. Hey, Melanie! When you go into Blogger click on Settings>Post and Comments>Comment Location ---> Choose Embedded! I hope that helps!

  5. I have this as well and thought it would save me the trouble from haters and all since I'd be able to block them. But lately it's like the same ones comment. maybe i will remove it.

    1. Well I deleted mine so I hope it helps me as well. I just dont like how with blogger you cant comment to a comment you have unless you go straight to ur blog.

    2. I agree that Blogger needs to step up it's game about with the functionality of the comments! I think they are trying to do that with Google+ since you can now embed it as well, but I think I'll stick with this for now!

  7. I have Disqus installed and it only acts up from time to time and it seems it only acts up certain people and not everyone. No idea, why!

  8. I oftentimes wonder if the Google+ commenting app is user friendly enough and if all my followers can comment on it. I hope so! I actually even googled this last night, which commenting format is best for blogger. I didn't find an answer however. Did you think about going the google + route?

    1. I am currently considering it, Sherry! It's so knew so there isn't a lot of information out about it right now. I know that G+ is going to be big within a couple of years based on the way that Google is pushing and promoting it and shutting down other things like Google Reader, etc. It's just a matter of time so I'm trying to get ahead of it a bit, I just don't want the same issues that I've confronted with Disqus. I'll let you know my thoughts if I give it a go! Thanks so much for your comment!!!

  9. Hey there!

Same problem here... On some browsers it wouldn't even appear!
I removed it a couple of months ago and finally people leave comments again ;o)

Have a great Friday and a blessed weekend!

  10. Hey ,
It's a great decision . I get uncomfortable with other comments softwares unless it's blogger's comment box .
I tried G+ comments but they didn't turn out well . So I am back with blogger :)

    1. I've been wondering about G+ myself, Noor, but I need to do a little more research. I know that everything is heading that way (towards G+ and Circles, etc) based on the way they're promoting it. Why didn't you like G+?!?

  11. hmm, I like the regular blogger form myself. I am signed up for disqus and can comment but on my one friend's site it just won't load for me! so I can't comment on her blog when it doesn't work!

    1. Yeah, Dara, I get that on certain sites too since I'm also signed up for it. I don't know why I didn't think about it when I installed it considering that I was having problems commenting on other blogs that had it!

    1. It's definitely something to consider, Jamie, but know that it has a few kinks! I still think it's a great program just something that needs a little more time to develop so that it's even better for it's users!

I so enjoyed meeting you as well, dear, and I hope to see you at the summer meetup!!!

  13. It's definitely not just you who's had problems with Disqus! I continue to have issues with my comments randomly just not showing up which results in readers not being able to leave comments. Even after trying to seek help from Disqus, my issues have not been resolved. I never know if one day my comments will show or not. It's frustrating! I do also love the concept because I can reply to comments on my blog instead of through email, but not sure if it's worth it. I'm one more problem away from installing, too.

    1. Yeah, I was having the same problems. I think it's still early for Disqus and perhaps they still have a few kinks to work out to perfect their program / service. After having a few readers let me know that they were having trouble with it on my site I finally decided it was time to let it go. It's definitely not worth losing the interaction and community I'm hoping to build here!

  14. I've seen DISQUS installed on a few blogs, and I'm not sure if its something I'd want to add on my blog. I don't like that it doesn't provide the option to leave your website url. It gives you the option to leave your comment using social networking accounts, but to my knowledge doesn't link back to the commenter's blog. As I go along (blogging) I'm finding that some blogging tools are not useful for my blog.

    1. In order for a link to your blog to show up you have to register with Disqus instead of signing into Disqus through Twitter, etc. I recommend that people do this so that their link will show up when they comment on blogs that have the program installed. Since I don't want to force my readers to have to signup for yet another program I've decided that it's not for me, at least not at this time!

  15. It sucks that you removed Disqus. I love to use it and already have an account :). Did you have guest commenting enabled when you had Disqus on the site?

    1. Let me guess, Michael, you work for Disqus?!? I had everything in order when I installed it. There were just days when it wouldn't show up on the blog or my readers didn't want to input any information or have to login just to leave a comment. It just made more sense for me to remove it for the sake of my readers! No hard feelings towards Disqus and their innovative program!

  17. Add me to the club of folks who dislike Disqus. I hate jumping through hoops so that I can comment on a post and I worry about security.

I've been using Postmatic on my blog as an alternative for comments - http://wordpress.org/plugins/postmatic. Folks seem to be responding well to the ability to respond to posts via Email.

Thanks for taking the time to comment! I read and cherish each and every one and do my very best to respond to all in a timely manner.
