Healthy Living

Over the next few weeks I’ll be talking a lot about eating healthy and being active.  My husband and I have made a pact to be more mindful of what we eat and to increase our physical activity! We currently eat relatively healthy with me cooking most nights, usually from scratch, but there is definitely room for more fruits and vegetables, and less sweets. My husband is very active already but there are some things we can do together as a family and I just need to get my act together period!

…and so begins the Pharr Family – Healthy Living Project

Healthy Eating – Nicole as the lead
We recently had a food drive in our subdivision and it could not have come at a better time.  I was able to get rid of any pasta, boxed meals, canned fruits and vegetables, etc. since we’ll now be eating more brown rice, whole-wheat pastas, and fresh vegetables and fruits.

I also signed up for Backyard Produce which is essentially an online farmer’s market that delivers fresh produce to your home each week.  I chose to get the variety basket each time so that we can continually try new things.  We get our first basket on Tuesday and I can’t wait to receive it and share it’s contents with you all!

Also, I’ve been getting a lot of questions from family and friends in regards to “what’s the harm” in consuming some of the things I’m trying to remove from our diet.  Therefore, in the coming weeks I’ll be sharing information that explains why we have chosen to move away from certain items like white rice, for example.  It is also my hope that people understand that it’s not so much about being strict and being on a “diet”, it’s more about not making certain items a common staple or go to food within our home.

Physical Activity – Mario as the lead

As I stated earlier, Mario is very active already but we plan to start taking walks as a family on days that he’s available during the daylight hours.
In addition to this he does a simple routine every night and Maddie usually helps him by acting as a weight (or showing him how to do it properly :))!  I’ll be joining the two of them each night from this day forward.
Individually, I will either run or do one of my many workout DVD’s at least four times per week.  Mario will be keeping me accountable (wish him luck)! But to really kick it into gear and form a habit I’ll be doing a Mayathon (more on this in another post).  Basically I’ll be doing some sort of physical activity every day for the entire month of May! Crazy, I know, let’s just pray on it, shall we :)!
So that is it folks!  We’re not planning on making this any harder than it has to be, just a few simple changes that I’m sure will make a major difference in how we feel (and how long we live, I hope)! So get ready for a whole lot of health talk, and join us even, on our journey towards healthy living!
Be sure to join me and others in two weeks for the Monthly Measures link-up on the first Monday of each month (May 6th)!  I’d love to hear about what you and your family are doing to live a healthier lifestyle!
