Madison Lynn – From Pregnancy to Birth {Part 4}

I hope you’ve enjoyed the story thus far! If you’re new to this series (or the blog), I’m talking all things Maddie this week in anticipation for her very first birthday on Tuesday!!!

Now, if you haven’t done so already, read {Part 1}, {Part 2} and {Part 3} of our story first :)!

So, my last few weeks of pregnancy was upon us and I still thought I had it, minus the nose that got SO wide at the time!

And who is ready to get this baby out?!? I am! It’s a week before she’s due and I’m eating a whole fresh pineapple, dancing to Bel Biv Devoe, attacking Mario (in a good way)…you name it, I’m trying it and nothing worked!

Fine!

Since I had gestational diabetes and had gained over 40+ lbs throughout my pregnancy, I was scheduled to be induced anyway for fear that she may get too large. Uh, yeah, that weight was all me, but ok!

So, our due date was February 22nd and we were scheduled to be induced on that Friday, February 24th.  How it worked was that we’d have to call the hospital at 7pm to ensure that room was available and if so we could come in and start the process. Of course there was a storm and everybody wants to go into labor naturally during a storm so when I called there was no space. But, the nurse called me back at 8pm and said if you can get here ASAP we have one spot open…YES!!!!!

Keep in mind that we literally lived five minutes from the hospital, no exaggeration. So, I’m grabbing my stuff and rushing out the door, as if we have an hour drive, but Mr. Cool is steady, trying to shut things down (i.e. his Play Station because “it’s a computer and I don’t want it running the whole time we’re gone”)! Fine then, dang-it! “Did you not hear the nurse, we’ve got to get there NOW! I’m out of here, you can meet me there!!!” Call me the crazy, pregnant lady, but he got his keister in the car! I made a mental note to demolish the Play Station once and for all upon our return!

We arrive, get settled and the induction process begins Friday night with the insertion of the Foley balloon catheter.  You should probably Google it, but essentially the pressure from the “balloon” is used to naturally and gradually dilate the cervix and facilitate labor induction. Yeah, this mess was as terrifying as it sounds to me at first too!  But it turned out to just be uncomfortable and I had to sleep and carry on with it until it released itself.

Saturday, February 25th arrives and the catheter is out and it’s time to introduce the dreadful Pitocin! Thankfully family and friends are arriving to keep me distracted! I’ve also got my Kindle, so I download Whitney Houston’s, I Look to You to play on repeat, and pray to God for a swift delivery, managed pain and a healthy baby with no complications, then I think about my mother and wish she were there to hold my hand and calm my nerves.

The Pitocin is working it’s magic and I’ve cursed it in my mind. The contractions are strong but I’m managing. No tears, yet. It’s midday and I’m about 5cm dilated, 80% effaced. Woot! Let’s go, Maddie!!! But where’s that darn anesthesiologist, I thought?!? He finally arrives and get’s me going, but I still feel everything, so they up my dose.  Oh there it goes, my left leg is numb, great, that’s helpful! Somebody owes me at least $1200 of the $1600 I’m paying for this useless epidural!

The Pitocin is increased.  Mario’s there by my side every single moment. Getting me what I need.  Anxious. Happy. Smiling.  I think I hate him. Yeah, I’m pretty sure of it at one point during all this, but not really.  Gosh, I love him SO much.  I’m Anxious. Happy. Crying (welcome to the emotions of a woman in labor).

By nightfall, I’m completely miserable….somebody, anybody, get this baby OUT! I continue to dilate…

Slowly.

12:40am…IT’S TIME!!!

My friends, Mionna and Tia, and family in the lobby were told it was time and Tracy, who helped raise me, runs back to the delivery room to grab a leg :)!

Next up…

    Why does this make me want another baby! I loved being pregnant and I loved the birthing experience. I cannot wait for our second in a couple years.
